“THE HILL WE CLIMB” VS “THE HILL WE CREATED”

Amanda Gorman recited the poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration event of Joe Biden in January 2021. The poem was written during the USA Presidential Election, 2020. It was written in response to the great storming of the US Capitol. At its heart, the poem upholds the lesson for unity and togetherness in American society. Additionally, it also emphasizes the opportunities that the upcoming time offers.

In response to Amanda Gorman, I wrote a poem “The Hill We Created”. However, Amanda wrote from a progressive view, the deplorable poet’s response is Libertarian.  It states that we must take responsibility for a divided nation by rebuking the partisan approach that both parties are responsible for.

The Hill We Climb

The poem by Amanda celebrates the United States, not as an example of a “perfect union” rather as a nation that has the grit to work hard for its real issues. The phrases of the poem reflect that everything doesn’t happen at once. It tends to take time before the change finally finds its way forward. The poet particularly reflected change as painful as climbing the hill for justice, requiring both patience and humility.

We are striving to forge a union with purpose,
to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man.

Amanda Gorman illustrated that change and hard work go side by side. It is dedicated to the devoted Americans who see Joe Biden as a light for a bright future. She visualized America not as a broken state but simply unfinished.

When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid,
the new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.

The Hill We Created

In reference to my libertarian approach, American society should embrace liberty as its core principle. I think now we should seek to maximize our autonomy and focus on individualism and freedom of choice. I praise the work of Amanda but I consider it as a message for unity, representation of the past, and inspiration for the future.

I like to add a phrase here that the poignant reflection by Amanda cannot be taken as a masterful delivery of the progressive vision. Rather, it can be marked as her effort to place herself in the African oral tradition. As highlighted in my work below:

Today is

A New Era

One in which

We can use

For our own

Selfish political

Advantage

Or one in which

we

Seriously

Consider

A genuine

bipartisan

Approach

In response to Amanda, I also added that libertarianism is not about extremism. It is more about individualism, which can be regarded as a progressive extension of dignity to society including women, people with distinctive cultural backgrounds, races, and religions. Adding to it, this approach can propose American society’s liberty under the law.

Libertarianism

Is not extremism

Ironically

It is the

Extinguisher

to big party

Control

And is only

a threat

to those

who only

Seek

to eradicate

the character

To individualism

Wrapping Up

In my understanding, Amanda’s view is contradicting the practices of American society. I strongly believe in libertarian’s view that war brings death and damage on a larger scale. A liberal society can be resilient; it can significantly withstand wider burdens while constantly flourishing at the same time.

Below is the poem “The Hill We Created” By the deplorable poet

THE HILL WE CREATED

By the deplorable poet

In camera lights
words are spoken
to a nation

suggesting unity

telling us to
focus what is before us
rather than what divides us

the hill we climb
is the hill we
created
we  braved
the belly of the beast
because we evolved
 From it

We cannot however
choose  to
erase
what became
Before us

History
Good, bad,
Beautiful  and
The ugly,
are ours to own

Lest we
Forget

We must not
Though
Own the sins
of our forefathers

It is not our shame

Just an example
Of what not to become

Today is
A new Era

One in which
We can use
For our own
Selfish political
Advantage
Or one in which
we
Seriously
Consider
A genuine
bipartisan
approach

No labeling
Belittling
or
demonizing

We cannot
Claim
To love
our
Neighbor
Whether
He/she
Be red
Yellow
black
Or
white
While
At the
Same time
Enslaving
The right
Of being
An
Unique
Personage

Riots
Did not
Spark at
The capital
Because
Words were
Heard

Violence erupted
Because
Voices
Were silenced

Libertarianism
Is not extremism

Ironically
It is the
Extinguisher

And is only
a threat
